FROM ROME TO TRIESTE: DISCOVER THE JEWISH HERITAGE IN ITALY

 

ITINERARY:

1º day: arrival at Rome airport and private transfer to the hotel in the city center. Free time. Dinner. Overnight in Rome. 

2º day – ROME
Breakfast. Meeting with your guide at the hotel and sightseeing tour of Jewish Rome: the Jewish quarter, the Synagogue, one of the largest synagogues erected in Europe between 1901 and 1904, and the Jewish Museum. In the afternoon you can choose between a guided tour of the city center with Fontana di Trevi, Coloseum, Piazza Navona, or a guided tour of the Vatican Museum, where you will find also Jewish manuscripts, or you can have time at leisure for shopping. Dinner. Overnight in Rome. 

3º day - ROME - PITIGLIANO – FLORENCE
Breakfast. Transfer with private coach to Pitigliano and stop for the guided tour of the little city. Pitigliano housed the Jews perhaps since the late fifteenth century and became for them an important center of refuge in central Italy, so much to erect a Temple in 1598. Lunch then transfer to Florence. Dinner and overnight in Florence. 


4º day - FLORENCE – BOLOGNA
Breakfast. Guided tour of the Jewish sites in Florence: the Synagogue and the Jewish Museum. Lunch and taste of the famous Chianti wine. In the afternoon, transfer to Bologna. Weather permitting stopover at Outlet Village “Barberino del Mugello” for shopping. Check-in in hotel in Bologna, dinner and overnight. 

5º day - BOLOGNA – VENICE
Breakfast. Guided tour of the Jewish sites of Bologna, with a stop for lunch. Late afternoon transfer to Venice. Dinner. Overnight in Venice.

6º day – VENICE
Breakfast. Guided tour of the ghetto area, the Museum and the Synagogues. Lunch. In the afternoon you can choose between a guided tour of the historic center with Piazza San Marco, Rialto Bridge, the district of Dorsoduro, or take an excursion to the islands of Murano and Burano, or have free time for shopping. Dinner. Overnight in Venice.

7º day - VENICE – TRIESTE
Breakfast. Transfer to Trieste. Visit the enchanting Miramare Castle and its Park. Built by the will of Archduke Maximilian of Habsburg in 1855 as a residence in keeping with his rank, overlooking the sea and surrounded by an extensive garden. After the visit, transfer to the Carso area where you will visit and taste local wines accompanied by typical products. In the afternoon guided tour of the Jewish Trieste, with the Synagogue and the Jewish Museum. Dinner. Overnight in Trieste.

8º day: TRIESTE - DEPARTURE
Breakfast at the hotel. Guided tour of the Jewish cemetery and the Risiera di San Sabba, the only Nazi extermination camp in Italy. Lunch. Transfer to the airport.

THE JEWISH HERITAGE RICHNESS IN ITALY

Tour 9 Nights – 10 Days

Have you ever thought about Italy as a country rich in Jewish history? For centuries, this marvellous land has preserved an incredible artistic and cultural Jewish heritage that is unique in the world.

With this tour you will discover many fascinating places that you may have never heard about and you will be surprised by their peculiar beauty and hidden treasures.

 

 

The tour will start in Parma, the city of the famous cheese “Parmigiano Reggiano” (that you will taste), is also the custodian of an extraordinary collection of Jewish printed material and manuscripts held in “Biblioteca Palatina”.

In Carpi you will see the deportation camp of Fossoli, used by the Nazis for the deportees being sent to the extermination camps, including Primo Levi.  Nearby is the Monument to the Deportee, which preserves the painful memory of the atrocities of the Nazi period.

In Modena a ghetto was established in 1638 and it became a lively centre of Cabalistic studies. The literary tradition of the city was maintained even in later times; since the 18th century a rich collection of illuminated manuscripts has been preserved in the “Biblioteca Estense”.

Bologna has many points of interests in the ex-ghetto area and in the new Jewish quarter, where you can discover traces of the Jewish presence among documents, monuments, and hidden inscriptions.

In Ferrara you will pass through centuries of history, as Jews lived there from the Middle Ages.  You can still feel the memory of their past walking along the streets of the ghetto, which have preserved their original appearance.

Padua, famous for its University where Galileo Galilei taught, was the only University in Europe to accept Jewish students in the department of medicine in the 15th century. The attractive buildings in the city centre will surprise you, where the ghetto was situated, in particular by its tower houses - as the ghetto had strictly defined borders, the only way to expand the living quarters was to build up.

The tour will end in Trieste, the “gateway to Zion”, the city that helped thousands of Jews from Central and Eastern Europe on their emigration to Israel. The monumental synagogue symbolises the importance of the Jewish community in the past centuries, while the “Risiera di San Sabba” reminds us of the terrible period of the extermination camps.

 

DAY 1 – Arrival at Milano Airport and transfer to the city centre. Check-in in hotel. Dinner and Overnight in Milano.

 

DAY 2– MILAN -SORAGNA – PARMA

Breakfast. Transfer to Parma, a town with Etruscan origin, where the Jewish Community returned in 1866 after a two-century absence. Before arriving in Parma, our itinerary stops in the small centre of Soragna for a visit of the Jewish Museum “Fausto Levi” and the Synagogue. Arrival in Parma and visit to the Biblioteca Palatina, home of the largest collection of Hebrew manuscripts in Italy, and the second largest in the world after the Bodleian library in Oxford. At the end transfer to a “Parmigiano Reggiano” cheese producer, for a tasting. Overnight in Parma.

 

DAY 3 – CARPI – MODENA - BOLOGNA

Breakfast. Transfer to Carpi, where a guided tour will be organised to visit the town, the Fossoli deportation camp, and the interesting Monument to the Deportee. Transfer to Modena, where you will have lunch. In the afternoon guided tour of Modena with the Jewish Ghetto and the renowned Estense Library, which features a collection of illuminated Jewish manuscripts. Transfer to Nonantola and the famous Villa Emma, where over 100 young Jewish boys where hidden and saved during WWII. Drive to Bologna, dinner and Overnight in Bologna.

 

DAY 4- BOLOGNA

Breakfast. Meeting with your tourist guide for the visit of the Jewish ghetto and Museum. Afternoon- classical tour of the town, which include The Archiginnasio and the Anatomy Theatre. Overnight in Bologna.

 

DAY 5- FERRARA

In the morning, transfer to Ferrara. Guided tour of the city: you will see the Jewish quarter with its peculiar streets and buildings. Afternoon transfer to Abano Terme. Free afternoon in Abano Terme. Overnight in Abano Terme.

 

DAY 6 –  PADUA

Breakfast at hotel. Transfer to Padua, famous as a centre for Talmudic studies and has had a continuous Jewish presence since the 11th century. Padua was the only University City in Europe to accept Jewish students in the school of medicine way back in the 15th century. Lunch in Padua. The visit to city centre will focus on the Jewish sites and the famous Scrovegni Chapel, with the cycle of frescoes produced by Giotto. Transfer to Trieste Free evening in Trieste. Overnight in Trieste.

 

DAY 7 – TRIESTE

Breakfast. Visit to the Jewish sites of Trieste, including the monumental synagogue. Lunch in a traditional restaurant of the city centre. In the afternoon visit to the Jewish cemetery and to “Risiera di San Sabba”, the only Nazi extermination camp in Italy. Followed by free time in Trieste. Overnight in Trieste.

 

DAY 8 - VENICE

Breakfast and transfer by train to Venice.

Check-in in hotel then meeting with local guide to explore this unique city, built on 120 island, and connected over 240 bridges. During the visits you will admire Venice masterpieces of Italian Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architecture: Ca d’Oro (the Golden House), St. Marks’ Square, Palazzo Ducale, Ponte dei Sospiri (Bridge of Sighs), the San Marco Byzantine Basilica and Ponte del Rialto.  Lunch and dinner on own. Overnight.

 

DAY 9 - VENICE

Breakfast and the visit to the dreamy Venice will continue with the discover of the Jewish Heritage: the city were the word “ghetto” was used for the first time (it comes from the Venetian word “geto” indicating the foundry where the ghetto was situated). You will see the peculiar synagogues built into private houses as well as the artistic heritage that this city on the water has preserved for many centuries. Afternoon time at your leisure. Overnight.

 

DAY 10 - DEPARTURE

Breakfast and transfer to the airport of Venice by private boat.

VENICE, TRIESTE, LJUBLJANA: THE NORTHERN BEAUTIES

Tour 5 nights – 6 days 

DAY 1 – VENICE

Arrival in Venice airport. Transfer to the Hotel. Meeting with the guide for discover the main highlights of the city on the sea. Overnight in Venice.

 

DAY 2 - VENICE

After breakfast guided tour of the Jewish quarter and its synagogues. Free lunch. In the afternoon transfer by private boat to Venetian Islands Murano, Burano and Torcello. Visit to a Murano glass factory, where you can also buy a special souvenir! Overnight in Venice.

 

DAY 3 – TRIESTE

After breakfast, transfer to Trieste. Visit at the beautiful Miramare Castle, sheer above the sea, which was the residence of the Archduke Maximilian of Hapsburg. The original furniture and decorations inside the castle convey the charm of an imperial residence. The castle is set in vast gardens that stretch out along the coastline with many species of tropical plants and trees. This scenario provides with the opportunity to enjoy a quite interesting botanic walk along paths and parterres hemmed with a vast assortment of sculptures. Ate the end of the visit, transfer to a famous wine cellar of the Carso Zone, where you will have the opportunity to visit the canteen and taste some of the typical wines, as Vitovska, Terrano, Prulke, together with some snacks of local products. Check-in in hotel in Trieste and dinner with traditional food in a restaurant of the city center. Overnight in Trieste.

 

DAY 4 – TRIESTE

Breakfast. In the morning guided tour to the Jewish Trieste. The tour starts from the beautiful Piazza Unità d’Italia, the biggest square in Europe facing directly on to the sea. From there we enter through the “Portizza” (one of the ghetto gates) in the ex-ghetto area, which is now rich in antique and bric-à-brac shops. Passing through Via del Monte, where is located the Jewish school, we find the Museum of the Jewish Community, named after Carlo and Vera Wagner. It exhibits Hebrew ritual objets d’art, documents and books testifying to the intensity of the Jewish life in Trieste, and representing one of the most important repositories of the Jewish heritage in Italy. During the tour you will visit the Morpurgo Museum, that originally was the home of a rich Jewish family - the Morpurgos – and was turned into a major museum documenting the 19th century’s bourgeois taste with its original furnishing. The synagogue of Trieste is a beautiful building dating back to the early 20th century. It was inaugurated in 1912, and it replaced the four smaller temples that previously existed. It has been considered the most outstanding Synagogue in Europe, with its singular architectural style. The monumental interior is decorated with elements inspired to middle-eastern art and with traditional Jewish art pattern. Overnight in Trieste.

 

DAY 5  – POSTOJNSKE JAME AND LJUBLJANA (SLOVENIA)

After breakfast transfer to Postojnske Jame, a 20-kilometre long underworld system. The cave is accessible without special equipment, and has a constant temperature of 8° C. Visitors are taken for a tour by a special cave train, and then are accompanied on foot by experienced guides. After the visit to the Caves transfer to the hotel in Ljubljana (Slovenia).

In the afternoon guided tour of the city centre, to admire the Austro-Hungarian charm of this city. Returno to Trieste. Dinner and overnight in Trieste.

 

DAY 6 – DEPARTURE DAY

After breakfast transfer to Venice.
